PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The graduate program requires full-time mandatory attendance starting in June of every year. The program combines courses in the basic sciences with clinical and behavioral training relevant to the delivery of orthodontic care. A strong background in contemporary biomechanical concepts related to orthodontic mechanotherapy is also provided. Instructions in the didactic and clinical curriculum consist of (a) lectures, seminars and practical courses, (b) clinical education, and (c) research.

The lectures and seminars are given in English. They run for a total of four regular semesters and two summer sessions.

Each student is required to complete a research project while maintaining a general weighted average (GWA) of 2.00 or better to fulfill the requirement for the MSD degree. The following are the grade requirements for each student to be of good standing in the program: 1) GWA of 2.00 or better, 2) weighted average of 2.00 or better for the major/required courses, and 3) no grade of 5.00 in any academic course. A maximum of 5 years is given to a student to finish the program.

The research project is carried out under the tutelage of a faculty member of the Department of Orthodontics and in cooperation with other institutes, when necessary.

The Degree of Master of Science in Dentistry (Orthodontics) shall be awarded upon the fulfillment of the following:

  1. Completion of the required course works and hours of clinical practice.
  2. A general weighted average of 2.0 or better.
  3. Passing of comprehensive examination to be given by the Graduate Program in Orthodontics
  4. Completion of the minimum number of satisfactorily finished cases
  5. Successful defense of a 6-unit thesis before a panel of examiners.
